How to renovate your house in order for the space to support your lifestyle
Case study: Elisabeth Wolffstraat | House renovation in Amsterdam West
Moving your family to a new country can be overwhelming in and by itself. If you add on top that, buying a new home and having to renovate it completely, with the entire design and construction process that entails, well then you might have your hands full. Now consider you are doing all that, while still living in another country, and you might just start to imagine the challenge our clients were facing in this project!
Renovating a new house you bought, while still living in another country can be a very scary prospect. For this project, our clients trusted us with the entire process of design, renovation and construction, from structural demolition to all the furniture. While there were still living in another country, we took over in Amsterdam and handled the entire project for them.
Because this 5-storey Amsterdam house was being rented, up to when our clients bought it, its layout was not suitable for a family lifestyle. Our first task was to redesign the flows in the house to suit the interactions of a couple with a young child. We aimed to design a home that would support and facilitate the entire spectrum of activities that they had in their lifestyle, including working from home, balanced with kid friendly spaces and accommodating international houseguests, to name a few. We created a practical, intuitive flow, in a simple look & feel, yet with a touch of colours that would capture in the house the character of the family.
For this project, our scope included renovating the complete space from the entrance to the terrace. Among others, we fixed a major leakage problem on the roof, we salvaged the existing floors, installed brand new electrical and plumbing systems, redid all the finishes, designed a brand new kitchen, redid all the bathrooms and toilets from tiles to equipment, and crafted the custom-made furniture.
Our goal was to redesign this rental property to suit a family lifestyle, in the best and most economic way.

The Colour Palette.
The palette for this project had to be simple yet vibrant. We played with a selective use of colour to suit the simple interior design we created. Interior colours are of major importance especially when people perform many activities in the same space, from family time to quiet time to working from home…etc. Colour can help differentiate and delineate spaces and support our mental wellbeing as we go from one activity to the next.
