How improve a family's lifestyle
Case study:Koekkoekstraat | Home Renovation in Hilversum
Renovating your house is an opportunity to refresh your whole lifestyle and implement adjustments that end up making your daily life more practical. When it comes to families, balancing work and domestic life is an achievement that can be reached easier when living in an efficient household.
For this couple and their two children, in Hilversum, a family-friendly, energy efficient and comfortable house, was the ideal scenario. To create their dream home, we had to make many alterations, not only to the interior design but also to the external shell, the garden, the garage and the basement as well.
Improving a Family’s Lifestyle
To accomodate a growing family, we proposed an extension of the kitchen on the ground floor. This not only allows more storage space, but also invites the family to move more freely while cooking and share special moments together in the kitchen. The extention being done as a winter garden, also allowed a lot more light to come into the open space.
In the rest of the house, we re-arranged the spaces to create enough room for 4 bedrooms and two home offices as well as living areas and play rooms for the kids.
Finally, we also enlarged the basement that was initially hard to access and small. The basement became a beautiful wine-cellar connected directly to the kitchen and dining area.
In terms of the garage in the garden of the house, we completely redesigned that space to accomodate both a parking space for one car as well as a small independent one-bedroom studio.

Repairs & Energy Efficiency
One of the most major issues with this particular residence, was the bad energy efficiency due to defect isolation and an old heating system. Te remedy that, it was imperative to isolate the walls and the roof and to re-do the heating system by removing the gas pipes and relocating the gas meter.
At the same time, the old windows needed to be reapired, and solar panels needed to be added.
Staircase
As we mentioned in our related article “Dutch Stairs Don’t Despair”, many Dutch buildings have impractical and sometimes dangerously steep stairs. That was the case with this house as well and we needed to alter the staircase design and functionality to make it more stylish and most importantly, safe for this family.
