How to renovate an apartment to match your unique lifestyle

Case study: Marrying two different styles | Apartment Renovation in Utrecht.

Moving into a new house is an opportunity to redefine your lifestyle, improve on some aspects and experiment with others. This is all the more important when you are moving as a couple or a family. Does the challenge become centered on how can you create a unified vision for different people? How can you accommodate different habits, different and sometimes conflicting needs and even contradictory styles  in one coherent home?

For our clients in Utrecht, we took on that challenge exactly. While our goal was to create a holistic home and a coherent interior, we did not want our clients to have to compromise their individual needs, wishes, and tastes to meet each other’s. Instead, we worked through a process to bring their differences together and create an overarching vision that gave every member of the family what they needed.

Within this 130m2 apartment in Utrecht, we created a large open living space, an open kitchen, an extended dining area, a hidden tranquil living room, two bedrooms, two home office set ups, a fully fitted bathroom, a powder room, a laundry room, a comfortable entrance and to top it all off, a terrace.

Needs and Lifestyle

While the house our clients purchased was livable, it was very far from being optimal.  To accommodate our clients’ goal to create a home that can accommodate life, leisure, work, downtime, fitness and social interactions among others, we undertook a full renovation of the entire apartment. We designed a new layout, minimizing the wasteful corridors and optimizing the different spaces both in terms of sizes and uses.

We created two separate home office setups to provide our clients full focus on their work, a space for working out in the privacy of their own home, a large living space for all their hosting wishes as well as a tranquil semi-hidden living room for those cozy relaxing evenings. The kitchen forms the center of the apartment and stretches along a large wall, starting as a kitchen and morphing into a library. The entrance, while one of the key moments in our daily interactions, is often overlooked. To create a welcoming and comfortable arrival point, we have redesigned the entrance to accommodate – in a relatively small space – a place for shoes, coats, bags, and keys, as well as a little bench to get those shoes on and off easily.
Colour and Aesthetic
Not only were our clients needs and wishes different, their styles and taste were also worlds apart. The colour palette we designed brought together bold gestures, stark shapes, large muted colours and smaller pop of colours all together into a coherent unusual interior, that our clients love.

AKKA’s Services

AKKA offered a complete end-to-end service in this project. After surveying the apartment, we took on the entire design, including layout, programming, spaces, lighting, look and feel, materials and finishes  carpentry and furniture. To turn the design into reality, we then undertook all the technical drawings, sourcing, suppliers, construction, negotiations and communication with the contractor and other parties, the electrical and plumbing installation, the installation of the lighting, the sourcing of the materials, finishes, fixtures and furniture, and anything else that was needed to turn an empty apartment into our clients’ dream home.

The Three Fatal Mistakes Report

Before you hire an architect for your home, make sure you avoid these Three Fatal Mistakes that most clients do when selecting an architect for their home design, construction or renovation project.

"This document was very interesting and I could not agree more with you. My wife & I had one experience of renovation with our current apartment. Our architect at that time should have read your document beforehand, to say the least."

“We would like to express our gratitude for the time you invested in helping us get to a clear picture.  Anna and I really appreciated the call we had with you, your responsiveness, and the great empathy that you exhibited throughout – we certainly felt very “well taken care of” when engaging with you.  On the practical side, we especially appreciated that there was the option to obtain robust bottom-up cost estimates for the construction itself (not every design architect offers this).”
